♦ According to Salisbury Police and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office sources the First National Bank at 322 E. Innes Street was held up today at 12:30 p.m. when a robber identified as Jerick Raheem Gray, 42, of Highpoint walked into the bank and robbed a bank employee of a yet undisclosed amount of cash.  The robber, armed with a knife, fled the bank parking lot in a Toyota pick-up truck with a pregnant woman behind the wheel.

Jerick Raheem Gray:

In very short order Salisbury Police and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies entered into a high-speed pursuit of the suspects’ pick-up truck down I-85 at speeds in excess of 100 miles-per-hour.  The pursuit continued into Davidson County where officers and deputies were able to disable the fleeing pick-up truck with “stop sticks” which flattened the tires on the 1100 block Mendenhall Street in Thomasville.  Gray jumped from the pick-up and attempted to run into the Anderson RC Hobby Shop where he was met by the co-owner Wesley Anderson who attempted to block him from entering the store.  The robber turned on Anderson and stabbed him multiple times, once near his heart.  Anderson is expected to recover. The robber was blocked from entering the store by several citizens holding the door closed.

Officers attempted to Taser the robber, but with little effect.  At that point a Salisbury Policeman Christopher Shenk, a 27 veteran officer, believing others were in immanent danger, shot the suspect Gray.  Gray expired later in the hospital according to reliable sources in Davidson County.  No officers were injured during the arrest.  According to reports the pregnant woman, who drove the pick-up truck, was taken to an area hospital because she appeared to be going into premature labor.

Thursday afternoon the Salisbury Police reported that a body cam video was reviewed showing that the officer Shenk, who fired his weapon, behaved in accordance with police procedures. Because an officer involved shooting was involved, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will review the shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave.
