♦ Veterans Coffee, a shop selling coffee by the bag and K Cups along with mugs, gift baskets, military ball caps, and cookies is closing its doors.  The owner Albert Shinn told customers and neighbors about the closing.  He’s turning off the lights at the Veterans Coffee after a less than three months run at 210 S. Main Street in Downtown Salisbury. The closing is allegedly due to the large drop in customers after the double murder last July near the Wells Fargo mural on W. Fisher Street.  Neighbors say he’s moving to Dallas, Texas.  Veterans Coffee was located a stone’s throw from Downtown Doughnuts that closed last Friday.  The Piedmont Players would not renew their lease because of the smell of doughnuts that permeated the Meroney Theater.

Observers thought setting up a coffee by the bag business in the less traveled 200 block of South Main Street was not such a hot idea.  And selling bag coffee and K Cups when area supermarkets, Dunkin Doughnuts, Walmart, and Amazon offered bag coffee at discount prices was a head scratcher. This past holiday season was not so hot for Downtown businesses save for a few niche shops.  Lack of foot traffic, high overhead, crime, lack of shopping draws, and the internet giants iced Downtown shopping.

Likely more Downtown stores will pull the plug by April.  Even bars and eateries are struggling.

Good luck in Dallas, Texas!
