Salisbury: Wells Fargo Bank Armed Robbery Goes Haywire Thursday. Salisbury Police Kill Bank Robber in a Shootout After a Highspeed Chase

♦ According to Salisbury Police sources an alarm went out from the Wells Fargo Bank on 866 Jake Alexander Boulevard W. at just after 5 p.m.  An armed robbery was said to be in progress and an unidentified customer was reported shot inside the bank and played dead. The woman was taken to the hospital. Her wound is said to be non-life threatening. A second person Larry Dalton, Jr.,45, was shot in the head and arm and tossed out of his 2015 black Acura after being carjacked in the Harris Teeter parking lot. He is said to be in stable condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A third individual Jose Santiago, 61, of Salisbury was shot and is in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The bank robber, now identified as Paul Jones, III, 25, of Pinyon Pine Lane in Charlotte after moving recently from Salisbury, wore a mask, threatened customers and bank personnel, and menaced them with a pistol. He demanded one of the customers turn over his car keys, but the customer could not understand English (Jose Santiago) and was shot for his perceived resistance.

The three officers, who displayed courage in engaging in a firefight after being fired upon by the late Mr. Jones, were Jay Basinger, Mike Colvin, and Joseph Martinez.

The crime scene is extremely large, stretching for blocks along Jake Alexander Boulevard. Helicopters thrummed overhead.

Salisbury Police arrive in numbers:

The bank robber, Paul Jones, III, driving a black Acura said to be stolen, fled the bank at high-speed as police raced into the area.  Soon Salisbury Police joined in the pursuit when a vehicle, matching a description of the getaway car, was spotted in the vicinity Brenner Avenue, S. Fulton Street, and Lincolnton Road.  Losing control, the car crashed on Jake Alexander Boulevard W. by Jerry’s Shell Station.  Jones fired on arriving police and they returned fire.  The firefight was brief.  The bank robber died of gunshot wounds in his vehicle. The driver’s side window left glass shards all over the seat and bank robber’s lifeless form.

The Salisbury Police are being joined by the FBI, the N.C. Highway Patrol, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, and SBI in the investigation in what is being termed a bank robbery and officer-involved shooting.  Other possible crimes may be included. Investigators are pouring over an extended crime scene. Traffic was cordoned off in the area.

Several other persons were injured during the pursuit and bank robbery.  No names have been released. Several cars were damaged along the pursuit rout.
