♦ Officers from Rowan Animal Services and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies swooped down on a rural home Saturday afternoon at 655 Geneva Drive in Rockwell, N.C. on anonymous tips of an alleged cockfighting operation.  About 2 dozen persons were on the property when the Sheriff’s deputies arrived. Most of the men fled from the house into the woods.

The investigators remained for several hours gathering evidence including 30 chickens either caged or tied up to the rear of cars and collected “fighting” razor spurs employed during cock fights.

The cock fighting took place in a fenced off area covered with a tarp roof. Blood and feathers covered the ground. Several dead chickens were scattered around the fighting area.

At 5:25 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies left the property after arresting four men and placing them in handcuffs: Victor Manuel Garcia, 37, who lived on the property, Manuel Villa Ocampo, 36, Marcial Clemente Rodriguez, 35, and Rogelio Leonardo Calderas, 44.

All four men were charged with cockfighting (felony). Each man received a secured $1,500 bond and was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center until they were released on bond. On Monday May 15th the men will appear in court.
