♦ A 9th grade student, Shaleek Williams, was punched in the face, then shot in the stomach inside the Salisbury High School gym at around 2:45 p.m. today according to police sources and students.

Two suspects fled the school grounds. Neither of the suspects were believed to be Salisbury High students. The shooting was said to be related to a weekend off campus fight.  The shooting, according to sources on the scene, may have been gang related. An estimated 60 to 80 teenagers rushed to the gym area. Students believed many of the two groups were outsiders from the neighborhood.  Shaleek Williams was transported by a parent to the Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in stable condition. 3 teenage males were questioned on the 900 block of South Jackson Street.

This evening arrest warrants were issued for Da-juan Lamont Russell, 17, from Salisbury.  The warrants are for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm on school property and discharging a weapon on school property.

At around 10 p.m. Monday night Da-juan Lamont Russell was arrested by the Salisbury Police at a family member’s residence on East Fisher Street.

Shaleek Williams,16 years old, was on the Junior Varsity basketball team scheduled to play this afternoon.  Salisbury High School’s Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball games were canceled today.

Salisbury High School was placed on immediate code red lockdown following the incident.  The lockdown was since lifted. Both the Salisbury Police Department and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department were on the scene.
